Full description
The first iron&ssteel works in Luxembourg were established in 1900 under the name “Société Anonyme des Hauts-Fourneaux de Differdange”with three blast furnaces and a Bessemer steel mill .
The world´s first hot rolled wide flange H-beams according to Henry Grey patent was manufactured in 1901 already.
In 1903 the works were bought by Hugo Stinnes and the “Deutsch-Luxemburgische Bergwerks- und Hütten-AG” was founded.
The plant was completely modernised in 1950´s and expanded with a tube mill and a narrow strip mill. In the following decade the first oxygen converter and a new blast furnace were put into operation.
In 1967 the company was merged with ARBED. The new converter steelworks was put into operation in 1972, just 8 years before the shutdown of the last blast furnace.
The entire production scheme, which depended on pig iron and coke, was replaced by an electric steel plant with a two innovative 150 t twin-shell DC arc furnaces.
In 2002, the merger of ARBED, USINOR and ACERALIA created the Arcelor brand, known as ArcelorMittal since 2006.
Differdange nowadays is the manufacturer of the the largest hot rolled H-profiles in the world.
