The Kolomna Locomotive Works is a major producer of railroad locomotives as well as locomotive and marine diesel engines in Russia. The plant started production in 1869 with a freight steam locomotive, one of the first in Russia. In the Russian Empire, Kolomna was one of the few producers in Russia. During this period, 139 types of steam locomotives were designed.
JSC "Kolomensky Zavod" is a modern dynamically developing enterprise, whose products are competitive in the world market. The Kolomna plant is part of the Transmashholding company , one of the world's largest manufacturers of railway equipment.
The specialization of the enterprise and the main directions of production are locomotive building and diesel building based on its own design and technological developments.

Full description
When the railroad construction reached town of Kolomna in 1863 it was necessary to build new bridge above Oka river in order to continue further south. For such purpose the railway bridge construction factory was built near the river banks. It was also the very first one of this kind in whole Russia.
Since 1895 the plant started production of steam locomotives and freight wagons.
In 1903 the very first ship diesel engine was manufactured here and since the 30´s the production was expanded with motorized trams and electric locomotives.
After a short period of military production for the War needs the plant switched back to railway industry and is still active within this sector nowadays.
