Engineering and metallurgical works in Uničov were established in 1949 as a state enterprise.
From the very beginning, production focused on castings for the mining industry, especially underground mining machines and wheel excavators.

In 1993 the works were privatized and new independent company UNEX was founded. Today they are continuing with established production program and belongs among the the top European producers of such kind.
Three induction furnaces (4-6 t) and two electric arc furnaces (8 and 15 t) are used for steel and cast iron melting.
